ABOUT OUR WINERY

The history of the Bertagna family farming and winemaking began centuries ago in Italy. The Bertagnas have been almond farmers for four generations, a tradition Berton Bertagna continues today.Berton's great grandfather made wine for his friends and family in Italy and continued the practice when he immigrated to Chico through Ellis Island in 1912.While the family continued farming almonds, the art of winemaking skipped two generations before being started again by Berton, through the encouragement of his wife, Carol.Carol's interest in wine began as an undergraduate at Chico State during the early 90's. She took an introduction to wine class taught by world-renowned wine expert, Dr. Marian Baldy and became very interested in winemaking.Also while at Chico State, Carol traveled to Italy for the summer as a part of an exchange program. After experiencing Italy with her host family, her interest in winemaking grew, and she fell in love with the Italian wine culture.After Carol and Berton married, they combined Berton's experience with farming and Carol's love for the Italian wine culture. In 2001 they began growing grapes to make wine.At first Carol and Berton only made wine for their friends and family, who loved their wine so much that they convinced the Bertagnas to make it available to the public.In April 2007, they opened the wineryConnor came to the winery in 2010 as part of an internship with Berton. With a degree in Enology and Viticulture from Oregon State and background in Computer Science from Cal Poly, he has now taken his place as the Assistant Winemaker, Enologist, and Webmaster at Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyard.

Process

Process of Winemaking
Here at Bertagna Winery our winemaker, Berton Bertagna, and Assistant Winemaker, Connor Vaccaro, take great care to use the best methods and materials available to create a high quality product.This care and attention to detail in every step of the winemaking process simply cannot be matched by larger wineries.Picking the GrapesThe grapes ripen between August and October and are picked when the sugar levels in the berry, called brix, and flavor profile are at the perfect combination for that varietal of wine.Crushing the GrapesOnce the grapes are picked they are put in the "crusher" that crushes the grapes and creates the "must," a combination of the skins, seeds and juice of the grapes.FermentationThe "must" is then put into open topped fermenation bins. The yeast is added and the "must" ferments for four to ten days. Fermentation occurs when the yeast digests the sugars in the grapes, which creates the alcohol.Pressing the WineThe must is then put into an Italian basket press. This presses the grapes and separates the must from the juice. The separated must is fed to the Bertagna's cows.AgingThe juice that is separated by the basket press is then pumped into French and American oak barrels. The juice is then aged 18-24 months.BottlingOnce the juice is aged to perfection it is ready to be bottled. A mobile bottler comes to the winery and the Bertagna's friends and family bottle the wine, insert the corks, and apply the labels.All this to create the perfect wine for you to enjoy with your friends and family!

Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to keep our tasting room open at all times as much as we would love to. If you or a group would like to come by for a tasting, please give us a call or send us an email. We would be more than happy to open the tasting room for you if we are available.

2010 Pinot Grigio

This light and crisp Pinot Grigio was made in the traditional Italian way. Picked at optimum ripeness, whole cluster pressed and fermented in small batches, we hope you can taste the difference.

2008 Barbera

Barbera is known as "the Italian everday wine". This Barbera fills the air with exotic spiced pungency. It also boasts nuances of pepper, anise, and a hint of peppermint. It's taste is powerful and fresh and easy to pair with any dish, especially traditional recipes, meats, and barbeques.

2009 Sangiovese

This Chianti-style red is smooth, supple, and easy to drink. It is garnet hued in color and you may taste red cherry and vanilla notes. This wine is smooth enough to pair with any food or to drink by itself. A great red wine for white wine drinkers!
